UNVEILING NOIRE: A VIRTUAL PIANO MASTERPIECE
Hey music aficionados! Today, I’m stoked to share the magic of Noire by Native Instruments, a virtual piano born from the creative collaboration between composer and pianist Nils Frahm and Galaxy Instruments. Picture this: a Yamaha 9-foot CFX Concert Grand, meticulously selected and customized by Frahm to capture his signature piano sound. The sampling journey took place in Saal 3, within Berlin’s iconic Bauhaus-designed Funkhaus recording complex, using vintage mics and preamps to ensure an authentic sonic experience.
DIVING INTO THE TECHNICAL SYMPHONY
Now, let’s explore the technical wonders of Noire. This virtuoso boasts two distinct personalities – Noire Pure and Noire Felt. The Pure version, sampled au naturel, delivers a pristine, intimate character, while the Felt version introduces a layer of felt between hammers and strings for a soft, nuanced sound. Both versions share a standout feature called the Particles Engine.
On the main page, Noire offers meticulous control with five dynamic parameters: Dynamics, Reverb, Delay, Color, and Tonal Shift. These controls transform the tonal character in unprecedented ways, from underwater depths to the enchanting harpsichord. The Piano edit page dives deeper, allowing you to sculpt every nuance. Explore Anatomy for volume controls, Noises for optional pedal, mechanical, and felt noises, and Tone for unique features like Low Keys, Sub, and Tonal Depth, unleashing a rich, resonant bloom.
The FX page hosts a three-band EQ, effects like Transient, Stereo Width, and a Compressor with 17 presets. The Style effect adds flavor with presets like toy speaker and old mics. Background noise options range from rooms to vinyl, even incorporating the pianist’s grunts and breaths. And don’t forget the spatial effects with convolution or algorithmic reverb and Kontakt’s Replica XT delay.
And then, there’s the showstopper – the Particles Engine. Imagine clouds of pulsating, swirling harmonic elements generated from piano tones, plucked strings, mallets, or brushes. With 17 preset algorithms, it adds a mesmerizing motion to your playing, creating rhythmic backdrops or aleatoric, random clouds that never repeat the same pattern. It’s pure, addictive beauty.

In my sonic exploration, Noire revealed its core piano sound as intimate yet slightly restrained. The consistency of timbre and dynamics across the entire range is commendable.
